Five cellulite-busting tips that really work

Five cellulite-busting tips that really work

It may take a little time to work, but applying a caffeine-rich moisturising lotion both morning and night will smooth the surface of the skin and even out its texture by upping the micro-circulation under the skin. It's crucial that you help the process along by massaging it in properly : use a knead-and-lift type of motion; a bit like working bread dough; to help eliminate any waste deposits. You can also buy massaging tools with built-in nodules to help the process. Dry brushing is also said to be brilliant for helping to reduce cellulite; simply sweep a bristled body brush in upwards motions over the effected area before applying your lotion.

Cellulite is often associated with circulatory problems, which also cause tired legs and swollen ankles. Avoid hot temperatures including hot baths and long periods in the sun and instead, shower in lukewarm water and finish with a cool blast. Equally, when you feel your limbs becoming heavy, try rinsing in cold water to stimulate circulation.

Whether it's water, herbal teas, smoothies, soups... hydrating your body is the best thing you can do to help tackle cellulite, while excessive alcohol consumption is conversely bad news. It's recommended that you drink 1.5 litres of water spread across the day. You should also try to 'eat your water' in the form of fruits and vegetables with a high water content; things like cucumber, lettuce, celery and watermelon are great.

Cellulite and poor circulation go hand in hand. Moving about stimulates blood flow and lymphatic drainage as when your leg muscles contract they act as a circulatory pump. If you're sat at your desk, flexing your feet and pointing your toes up and down will boost the blood flow between your ankles and your heart.

Opt for proteins and ditch salt, which will only up your water retention. It's a good idea to also bear in mind that high-quality fats such as olive oil, nuts and avocados are absolutely essential for keeping your body healthy; they're full of monounsaturated fats which, when eaten in moderation, keep your metabolism, heart, eyes, joints, hair and skin in check.
