Fake Tan How to Apply It For The Perfect Hue

Fake Tan How to Apply It For The Perfect Hue

Start by hopping in the shower and applying a coarse scrub containing salt, sugar or almond shells. Apply the scrub using circular movements, starting with your feet and moving up to your neck. Pay particular attention to your heels, elbows and knees, where the skin is thicker. And don't forget the backs of your hands, an area people often forget! This will ensure that your skin is even all over with no rough patches for your fake tan to build up on. A dab or two of moisturising cream on any blemishes or extra rough patches will also ensure that your fake tan goes on evenly.

Nowadays, there's a whole range of different fake tanning textures available, including mousses, mists, gels and creams; all of which help to reduce streaks when applied properly. Whichever formula you choose, start from your feet and work your way up to the top of your thighs. Go easy on rough areas (heels, knees, elbows), as the skin is thicker here and will colour more deeply than the rest of the body. Remember to protect your eyebrows and hair; a slick of petroleum jelly on these areas will stop the fake tan from clinging. For a uniform colour (and to avoid darker patches), wipe your elbows, knees and between fingers and toes with a damp flannel after application. Remember to rinse your hands immediately afterwards to avoid having darker palms. If you notice that any colour has built up here, rub a slice of lemon onto the area; the acids in it will really help to break the fake tan down.

The DHA in fake tans can dry out the skin. Make sure you stay moisturised, morning and night, with a lotion or rich cream. You can also finish off with a body oil, to give your fake tan a polished glow. For a long-lasting colour, apply your fake tan once a week. Our tip: use a body scrub and a rich moisturiser every three days to keep the colour even and minimise the appearance of any streaks.
