What's causing my cellulite ?

1. What exactly is cellulite?
Cellulite is a the fat deposit beneath the skin that makes your skin look dimpled and lumpy in certain places, most commonly in your stomach, legs, hips, and buttocks.

2. What causes cellulite?
The deepest layer of the skin, the hypodermis, contains cells called adipocytes. These store fat that's used as the body's energy reserve. These lipids or fatty acids come from our food and are stored as triglycerides. When we burn off all the calories we've consumed, our system remains balanced. When we don't, our reserves fill up and these adipocytes increase in volume. By up to a 100 times! This adipose tissue clumps together in particular zones and give the appearance of dimpled skin.

An increase in the volume of fat cells will compress our blood vessels and lymphatic system. This results in reduced blood flow. Cells and tissues receive less oxygen. Toxins are no longer effectively eliminated and stagnate in the skin tissue. The skin's functioning becomes unbalanced and slows down. Which results in swelling. What's more, poor circulation gives the skin a bluish hue. These imbalances may be triggered and exacerbated by hormonal changes - adolescence, pregnancy, certain medications, and menopause.

3. How does cellulite affect your skin?
The skin's texture is altered by poor irrigation and stagnating toxins. It becomes inflamed and collagen and elastin fibres are damaged. Over time, the fibres become rigid and hard. They form shells around the fat cells causing the surface of the skin to become irregular - the famous orange peel effect. This compression also touches nerve endings, which explains why the skin may hurt if pinched. This is where massage and active slimming ingredients step in, as they're formulated to drain away excess fat.

Mature skins may find that stubborn cellulite and sagging occur at the same time. This is why cellulite body creams for older skins also contain restructuring, densifying, and toning active ingredients.

Even though numerous treatments for cellulite are available in the market today, most of them are only temporary and should not be used to substitute for a healthy diet and regular exercise. Cellulite is extremely common and should not be a cause of worry. Fuel your body with the right nutrition and lead an active and healthy lifestyle to keep cellulite at bay.
